Why we built FilmSplit
We're coaches, parents and players first, and software people second. FilmSplit is the film tool we wanted on our own sidelines, so we built it.
Who we are
The people behind FilmSplit have spent their careers building software for large companies. But our evenings and weekends belong to youth sports: coaching, running the camera, hauling gear to the field and watching our own kids play. We've sat through the film sessions, chased the missing clips and answered the "can I see my kid's plays?" texts. We know what film night looks like at a youth program, because it's ours.
What we kept running into
- Software that kept costing more without getting much better.
- Camera leases that tie a whole program to one system for years.
- Paying per family, so every parent needs their own subscription just to watch their own kid.
- Film that's hard to get out: limited downloads for coaches, and no easy way to share or trade film with another team.
- Hours of cutting film by hand every week, one play at a time, just to upload the clips somewhere else or pass them around in group chats, Dropbox and Google Drive, which are no place to watch football.
So we split
It was time to split from the way it's always been done. Here's what we set out to build, and what FilmSplit does today:
Paste a Veo link or upload the game from any camera. Our own AI model, trained on real youth football games, finds the plays and cuts the game into clips, numbered in game order. Pay per game: no subscription needed.
No camera to lease and no system to buy into. Veo, Pixellot, Hudl Focus, Trace, a phone on a tripod, or clips you've already cut: it all works.
Download every game as ordinary MP4 files. Share it with a link, trade it with another coach, or upload it to Hudl if that's what your league uses.
Coaches, players and families all get in. Families see their player's plays and highlights at no extra cost: no per-parent subscriptions.
Break down every play, tag players, draw on the film, build playlists, and leave feedback that tags a player or parent so they actually see it.
We ship improvements all the time, and every team gets them. Better play detection, new film tools and fixes, without waiting on an upgrade cycle.
A price we'd pay ourselves
We set ourselves a rule: everything a youth team needs, in one plan, for about $30 a player a year or less. FilmSplit Pro is priced per team, by the year, and comes in well under that for a typical roster, with families included. Clubs and leagues put all their teams on one plan for less a team. And if you just want your film split, pay per game and skip the plan.
Where we're going
Playbooks, scouting reports and game planning are next, built into FilmSplit rather than bolted on to old software: PlayBuilder, Scouting Report AI and Game Planning are on the way.
We built FilmSplit for our own teams first. We hope it gives yours back a few hours a week, and puts more film in front of the kids who learn from it.
